The Artful Use of Hot Stamping and Spot UV
Choosing the right elements and areas to which these effects are applied is an important step in designing your yearbook cover. Here are a few tips and examples to help you make smart choices.
Hot Foil Stamping
Effective uses
- To outline a shape or large lettering
- To decorate text
- To highlight fine details in a graphic or element or photo
What to avoid
- Applying foil to extensive areas
- Applying foil to thick lines or lettering
Spot UV
Effective uses
To highlight:
- The main element of a colour image
- Text
- A logo
- A border
- Details such as stars in a starry sky, a few leaves on a tree, a word in a title
What to avoid
- Spot UV cannot be applied to leather
In the following examples, the spot UV areas are in blue and the hot stamping areas are in magenta .
To see and touch concrete examples of these two effects, look in the starter kit you received when you signed your contract. If you didn't receive the kit, contact customer service at 1-888-875-3290 Ext. 1 or yearbooks@laurentien.ca.
